Smette part of the offensive equation

Granville senior has key role in T-G-U’s run attack

Towner-Granville-Upham's Travis Smette wasn't expected to play a key role in the Titans' backfield when the 2009 9-man playoffs began.

However, he quickly became one.

Smette put together a solid performance in the opening round, rushing for over 100 yards in the Titans' victory over Divide County and then earned several carriers in the Titans' next three playoff games.

It added up to a great confidence builder for the Granville product and provided a springboard into his senior season.

"I worked out a lot this summer to prepare for football,' he said. "I just didn't want to be on the team...I wanted to be a contributor."

Smette has, and recently turned in a career-high 145 yards on 18 carries and three scores in T-G-U's win over Benson County.

"We definitely had plans for him this season,' said Titan coach Scott Thorson. "We knew we needed a counter attack on offense (for Tyler Thorson) and Travis was the guy to provide it."

Smette possesses good speed and has the ability to run away from defenders in the open field.

However, he admits he's still learning the position.

"I'm learning to be more patient and follow my blockers and find the lanes,' Travis said. "I'm getting more of a feel for the game and I'm also able to read defensive schemes better."

Thorson said No. 33 is a quiet, but determined player. "He's not someone that is going to dance around after a big run (or show off),' Thorson said. "He just goes about his business."

And his business is helping the Titans put together a solid offensive attack.

He's the consummate team player.

"I don't care about stats,' he said. "I just want the team to do well and hopefully we can go farther in the playoffs this year."

And Smette's contributions so far are paving the way for that possibility.
