Cavalier defeats Rugby

September 14, 2010
Tribune Staff Report

CAVALIER - Rugby put up 40-plus points in its region-opening win over North Prairie.

A week later, the Panthers were on the receiving end of an offensive exhibition.

Cavalier scored 44 points, including 32 in the first half to cruise to a 44-14 region victory over the Panthers on Sept. 10. The Tornadoes, picked by most coaches to win Region 2, had all their offensive weapons on display.

Third-year quarterback Jared Mack threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. Wide out Brandon Chrest reeled in a TD reception and Brennan Thorlkson caught two others. Running back Colby Smith also got into the act by adding two more scores.

It took the third quarter before Rugby would get on the scoreboard on Eric Kuntz's 46-yard TD scamper. The senior would add another score in the fourth quarter, but the Tornadoes' defensive line was effective in getting into the backfield and bottling up the Panthers' run game.

The loss evened Rugby's overall record to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the region.
