Rugby tops North Prairie

It didn't take Rugby senior standout Eric Kuntz long to make an impact the the Panthers' region opener against North Prairie on Sept. 3.

One play.

Kuntz returned the opening kickoff back 87 yards for a touchdown and Rugby was on its way to a 46-19 victory over the Cougars.

Kuntz would finish with over 300 all-purpose yards, including 231 on the ground and two scores.

Fullback Jason Goetz's run up the middle from three yards out gave the Panthers a quick 14-0.

North Prairie would get on the board late in the first quarter when senior quarterback Jaden Pfeifer hooked up with receiver Nathan Joraanstad on a 36-yard pass play. However, the Panthers would answer when quarterback Riley Olsen found Goetz from four yards. Rugby led 21-6 at halftime.

North Prairie would added two scores in the third quarter to pull to within nine points, but the Panthers found the end zone three more times in the final quarter to turn a tight game into a blowout.

The defense even got into the scoring act when Jarrett Lovcik recovered a fumble in the Cougar end zone. Rugby held NP to just 44 yards of rushing.

Pfeifer was one of the few bright spots for the Cougars, finishing with 208 yards passing and three touchdowns.

Rugby's Olsen threw just five times, but was efficient, completing four passes for 80 yards and a score.

The victory evened the Panthers record to 1-1 and 1-0 in Region 2. NP, meanwhile, dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the region.
