It’s county fair time

2010 event features plenty of entertainment and fun activities for people of all ages

Pierce County Fair organizers hope fairgoers come early and stay late this coming week.

The 2010 county fair, July 1-4, features a schedule chock full of events from morning to night for all ages.

There is plenty of diverse entertainment, ranging from rising country music artist Gwen Sebastian and mud run racing to a talent show and Northern Outlaw Racing.

Ever since the fair was resurrected in 2007 the focus has been on participation, says Don Jelsing, fair board president. Organizers bypassed bringing in the large carnival rides and games which required a large financial commitment in favor of holding more traditional fair events which focused on local participation, including 4-H livestock and static exhibits.

That approach proved successful in the creation of the Pierce County Hidden Talent Show which is now in its third year and is a fair favorite. The fair also includes many free activities as a to get more participation, including a nail driving contest, an Elvis lip sync contest, a pie-eating contest, a buffalo wild wings challenge, a pedal tractor pull and many kids' games.

Jelsing said its the people's fair and how successful it will be relies on how much fairgoers want to be part of the entertainment.

Fact Box

What: Pierce County Fair

When: July 1-4

Where: Pierce Co. Fairgrounds, Rugby

If you go: There is a $2 admission fee to get on to the fairgrounds, but there are many free events/contests to take part in. A $20 fair pass is also on sale which allows fairgoers to get in all five grandstand main events.

Of note: A new exhibit building was added to the fairgrounds

One of the points of emphasis this year was to boost evening attendance. Last year, sparse crowds took in the live music each night.

There is a good chance that will change this year as country music performer and N.D. native Gwen Sebastian takes the stage on Friday evening, July 2. Samantha Madison and Wildcard will perform on the grandstand on Saturday evening, July 3.

Bringing more food vendors to the fairgrounds was also a priority this year and the board has made arrangements to provide more variety for the attendees.

There is a $2 admission fee for people age seven and up to get on the fairgrounds, but there is plenty of free stage entertainment to enjoy. Among them is Daryl's Racing Pigs, Hannah Montana Lip Sync Contest; Old McHumble Petting Zoo, and a car and motorcycle show.

A $20 fair pass includes daily admission and entrance to all five grandstand events. Kids ages 7-11 pay $2 admission to get into the grandstand. There will be individual admission to each grandstand event as well.

The two-day attendance total last year was about 1,700 and the fair association is hoping that figure will be eclipsed this year with the added day and diverse entertainment which should appeal to larger audiences.

Fairgoers will also notice a new addition to the west side of the fairgrounds. The large exhibit hall will house 4-H exhibits.
