Veach to attend HOBY World Leadership Congress

June 18, 2010
Pierce County Tribune

Rugby High School student Janessa Veach, will be one of two to represent North Dakota at the HOBY World Leadership Congress in Los Angeles later this summer. HOBY stands for Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership, and is an organization that fosters leadership among teens.

Veach, who is the daughter of Duane and Andrea Veach, Rugby, attended the state HOBY convention earlier this month and it was there where she was selected to attend the World Leadership Congress.

She went through about a 30 minute interview process before being notified of her selection. "I was very surprised (to be chosen),' she said.

At the event, she will be exposed to groups of leaders in government, science, medicine, education, and media as well as in the private business sector. She will also engage in education workshops, panel discussions and one-on-one answer periods. The attendees will also do volunteer work, something she also did while attending the state event.

About 400 high school-age students from around the world will be attending the event. Veach will have to raise about $1,500 to pay for convention costs. Any organization, or individual who would like to help Veach with her convention, can contact her at (710) 741-4376.

Four years ago Breann Lenzmeier, of Rugby, also represented the state at the World Leadership Congress.
