JHS gym to be renamed for Rugby native Meyer

Jamestown High School voted unanimously earlier this year to rename the school's gym, currently Blue Jay Arena, to Jerry Meyer's Gymnasium, in honor of longtime coach and Rugby native Jerry Meyer.

The decision came after a request was made to the board by Jim Harty, Jr., a former player, and Gary Peterson, JHS school board member, that the name change would be a way to give back to Meyer for all that he has given to the school and the community of Jamestown.

From 1965 to 1989, Meyer, a 1950 RHS graduate, guided the JHS basketball team to 14 State Class A tournaments, bringing home four state titles in '76, '78, '82 and '87. Meyer also helped the team earn many regional titles.

With 523 career wins, the North Dakota Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association honored him as Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1982. He was also recognized as Class A Coach of the Year in '71, '76, '78, '80, '82 and '85.
