A change of heart for Leier

Benson County athlete glad she stuck with track

Maddock senior Erin Leier wanted to quit track her sophomore season.

"I hated it...I didn't like running and I complained about it every day,' she recalls. "It was my dad that motivated me to stick with it and said, 'one day it will be worth it.' He was right."

As a junior Leier had a breakout year, placing fifth in the 800 meters at the Class B state meet and running a leg of Benson County's 3200 meter relay which placed eighth.

She has again qualified in the 800 meters as well as the 1600 and 3200 meters and 3200 meter relay this spring.

"I was really surprised to qualify actually in the 1600 and 3200 as well,' Leier said. "Those are two events I haven't run very much."

In fact, she ran the 3200 meters just once.

BC?(Leeds-Maddock-Minnewaukan) coach Bobby Hoffner said Leier has really come into her own the past two seasons.

"I don't think Erin had her heart into track as much as volleyball and basketball,' Hoffner said. "She's put more time in it now and is reaping the benefits."

Leier certainly has her sights on finishing higher in the 800 meters at the state meet. Last year she was seeded second, but got off to a slow start and had to settle for fifth.

"I think I was more confident and less prepared to run,' Leier said of last year's race. "This year I'm more prepared."

Leier is among a group of BC girls who have qualified in the distance events. "It's nice having that friendly competition to push you at practice each day,' she said. "We push each other and it makes us better runners."

Her high school track season will come to an end later this month, but there will still be more track in her future. Leier will compete in the sport at Valley City State University.

"A couple years ago I would have never thought that I would run track in college,' she said.

It's funny how things work out.
