A role change

Syvertson coming off the bench to help Titans

Daniel Syvertson's role went from a starter to a spark plug for Towner-Granville-Upham's boys basketball team.

The 6-0 senior was a starter last season, but now comes off the bench, providing key contributions on both ends of the floor.

"It's a role he's accepted and excelled in,' says Titan coach Shane Walker said. "It's hard to come off the bench. You have to be mentally prepared to step in and contribute (at any moment)."

And Syvertson has done that.

He's usually the first or second player checking into the game. He admits it did take some getting used to earlier this season.

"It's tough to get into the flow of the game,' Syvertson said. "You really have to watch the game closely and be ready."

It's a role not entirely foreign to him, however. He was a reserve in his freshman and sophomore seasons.

His primariy role is to be a strong defender, and his main assignment is to prevent dribble penetration to the paint by opposing guards and forwards."You have to be in good position and be quick,' he said.

Offensively, he gives the Titans another capable shooter from the perimeter, and although he's not expected to be a big scorer, he can knock down shots. "When he gets his chances, we want him to shoot,' Walker said.

The success T-G-U has enjoyed since the beginning of January may come as a surprise to some, but not to Daniel nor his teammates. "We knew at the beginning of the season we could go far,' he said. "We have a lot of players with experience."

All filling a role, and Syvertson's willingness to change his role for the good of the team says a lot about his character and is part of the success the Titans have enjoyed so far this season.

"He's very supportive of his teammates and they are supportive of him,' Walker said. "He's a good kid (putting the team first)."
