The Rugby Police Department typically receives one call a month from local gas stations witnessing a motorist filling their tank and driving off without paying.

However, there was several gas drive-offs reported in January, according to Luis Coca, Rugby police chief. The department recorded five drive-offs, but there were likely several more that were not witnessed.

Driving away from the pump without payment is a crime and the offender is subject to a stiff fine and possible loss of their license, Coca said.

Whether it's the high price of fuel, the cold weather, or the fact many gas stations are right along U.S. Highway 2, making for a potential quick getaway, the reasons vary as to why there was a high number of gas drive-offs last month.

Residents who are filling up at local gas stations are asked to keep a watchful eye on those around them filling vehicles. If they witness a motorist leaving without paying, they are asked to report it immediately
