There must be something about those black jerseys that brings out the best in Rugby's girls basketball team. Seven of the Panthers eight wins so far this season have come out of town and in some tough places such as Velva, Leeds and Minot Ryan. The team started the season with seven games on the road and won four of them. "I think what those early wins did was build confidence,' said Rugby coach Jennifer Brossart. "They know they have the ability to go into a tough place and get a win." All those wins will hopefully prepare the team come the postseason where the Rugby will be playing on the road. Right now the team is looking to show it can string some wins together on the home court. The Panthers are just 1-3 in their first four home games, but those losses have come against three teams - Harvey, Bottineau and Westhope-Newburg, who are, or were ranked in the top 10 this season. The home schedule doesn't getting any easier as Rugby hosts perennial power Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood today, Jan. 30. Rugby doesn't have much depth, but hopefully that will improve in the coming weeks with the addition of freshman Aubrey Hovland. She's been battling sickness all season and Brossart is hopeful she will be able to play some minutes. "If we can add depth, especially by the district tournament, that's going to be big for us,' she said. |
