The sun was shining, temperatures were in the 30s, and more importantly, the fish were biting at the Rugby Eagles 15th (Almost) Annual Fishing Derby at Sand Lake about 10 miles northeast of Rugby on Jan. 16.

The two-hour event had a good turnout, and as always, there were plenty of kids fishing. And thanks to the unseasonably warm weather, many opted to fish outside to take in the afternoon sun rather than stay in a fish house.

Prizes were awarded for the top northern and perch caught by adults and children.

Keaton Nelson had the honor of catching the biggest fish of the day. His five pound northern was good for first place in the children's division. Morgan Clements caught the biggest perch, coming in at six and one-quarter ounces.

Charles Anderson caught the biggest northern in the adult division. The fish came in at four pounds, 7/8 ounces. Warren Gourneau caught the biggest perch at seven ounces.

Following the derby, a supper was held at the Eagles and other prizes were awarded through a drawing. Nathan Yoder received an ice auger; Stacy Atkinson received a depth finder; and Martin Tuchscherer received a portable fish house.
