On target

Towner nine-year-old Zachary Bryn bags big buck

September 18, 2009
Tribune Staff Report

Nine-year-old Zachary Bryn of Towner had quite a story to tell his fourth grade buddies at school earlier this month.

The youngster bagged his first deer - a 4 by 4 buck - while bow hunting about 12 miles north of Towner on Labor Day.

Zach, who is the son of Mike and Nancy, Bryn, was taking part in the youth bow hunt program offered through the North Dakota Department Game and Fish. He was accompanied by Mike.

"He was pretty excited (when he got the deer),' said Mike.

The two scouted the area a day earlier to find an ideal place to hunt. The two were sitting in a ground blind when the deer came about 12 yards away.

Zach took his time and made an accurate shot that struck the animal in the lung area. "He was pretty good with his composure,' Mike said. "I think I was more nervous for him."

The animal ran off about 100 yards before retiring.

Zach said he shot at targets to practice for the season, but admits it's much different lining up a deer than just a target.

Zach maybe just nine, but he already knows a great deal about hunting albeit as an observer. Since he was four, he been walking along side his dad and other family members during hunts.

Mike plans to have the head of the deer mounted for Zach. "That first one is pretty special to a hunter,' he said.

Hunting is a big part of the Bryn family and although Zach is a couple of years away from being able to hunt with a firearm, he will likely walk alongside his dad during the deer-gun season later this year. Eventually, he will take the hunters safety program to qualify him to be a licensed firearm hunter.

Zach isn't the only hunter in the Bryn house. Mike and Nancy's The daughter, McKenzie, completed hunters safety and will get an opportunity to hunt for a doe this fall with Mike as part of the a youth hunt program.
