Time for some potpourri

September 3, 2009
Pierce County Tribune

The Rugby street improvement project is nearly finished, and it's been a long time since the streets in Rugby have been in this kind of condition.

The project is going to also be under budget, which is a positive.

Of course, with any sizable project there are going to be some proverbial bumps in the road, and some residents voiced their disappointment with the curb and gutter replacement and restoration work on boulevards. There also appear to be some storm drainage issues to iron out.

Project officials are addressing them, and over time they will get them worked out. Yes, it's a project residents are going to pay a significant portion of, but it is a project that was sorely needed.

Enrollment increase is good sign

The first day student count in Rugby public schools was up a little from last year, and that's encouraging news.

The district, like many others, has been witnessing declining enrollment in recent years due to a number of factors, among them population decline in rural areas and smaller families.

While it's inevitable, student numbers will again drop. But for now school officials welcome this brief reversal in the enrollment trend. What that also means is additional state revenue dollars next year through the state funding formula.

Summertime blues

Well, the good news is it hasn't snowed this summer. That's perhaps the only good thing. After a long, long, winter, area residents were looking forward to hot days. There haven't been too many of them. In fact, just three times this summer has the mercury broken 90 degrees, according to local weather records.

Temperatures have been unseasonably cool, and this may go down as one of the coolest summers on record. Some leaves are already turning, and the official start of fall is just three weeks away.

Keep Sept 11 in your thoughts

This Friday, Sept. 11, is the eighth anniversary of the horrific terrorist attacks on this country. Take a moment to reflect on how those events affected the lives of Americans, and say a prayer to end violence against all peoples.
