![]() From the Pages of the Past'85 remembered for Wildcat wells, a towncrier coming and motocross races
The final bell rang on the old junior high building in Rugby in the spring of 1985 as the district's junior high students moved over to the high school the following fall term. Farmers had the crop in the ground, but were contending with topsoil crusting...and a surge in the number of homes for sale has created a buyer's market. These were just a few of the headlines in May of 1985. Here's a few more.
May 6, 1985—A spokesman for Amoco Production Company said there is plans to drill three to four wildcat test wells in the Pierce County area in the summer. Pierce is in an area Amoco designated as the Northern Division and is in the heart of an area classified by company geologists as the Mississippian Trend, which extends from the Canadian border south and includes eastern halves of Bottineau and McHenry counties and western halves of Rolette and Benson counties and all of Pierce County. May 13, 1985—The Selz Diamond Jubilee planning committee announced events will take place July 5-7, including an all-class reunion for the school. A dance at the old Dallas Danceland will be held an a jubilee king and queen will be crowned. Other events include a parade, beef barbecue, history pageant, fact sail and all-faiths memorial service. May 20, 1985—Seventy-two Motocross racers converged on the Pierce County Fairgrounds for a day of races. In addition, three-wheeler racers were held. Danny Stroh, race chairman, said there was 11 classes and a prize purse of $1,040. It was estimated about 250 people turned out for the races. May 27, 1985—The Rugby Centennial Committee and Edith Lysne has arranged for the town crier of Rugby, England, Andy Latham, to hold that position in Rugby, N.D. during the centennial events in Rugby and Pierce County next summer. Lysne met Latham during a visit to England earlier this year. Here are a few news nuggets from May, 1985. Playing At Centre Cinema: Porky's Revenge, Police Academy 2, Desperately Seeking Susan and the Care Bears Movie. Price of a Quasar Microwave Oven at A&C TV was $279.95. Buck's Sport and Western Shop's 21st anniversary sale featured a pair of boots starting at $47.99. Rugby's Ben Franklin was selling Colgate toothpaste at $1.15 a tube. Person of the week: This long-time Rugby resident had the idea of creating statuettes of Rugby High School athletes and cheerleaders, and in the spring of 1985, he was celebrating his 35th anniversary of introducing these unique keepsakes. Last week's answer: Bob Stenson, who went on to coach the Panthers to two berths in the Class A boys basketball tournament (1976 and 1980).
