Presidential portraits...a marching band and a race for mayor made news in 1990

District 7 Representative Quentin Christmas announced he would not seek a third term in the state legislature...Rugby hosted its one and only North Star Class A boys basketball regional tournament...and city of Rugby and county officials agree to a combined law enforcement center. These were some of the news making headlines in February of 1990.

Here a few more.

—February 7, 1990—Several Rugby merchants took part in a unique President's Day promotion. Portraits of U.S. President's were drawn on store windows using special markers so they would show up. Customers were asked to identify the different portraits to enter a drawing for special prizes. The winner received dinner for two at Andrew's Steak House as well as other rewards.

—February 12, 1990—For the first time ever, the Rugby City Council approved a local liquor establishment's request to serve beer and liquor on a Sunday. The request was filed by Rhonter Ltd., which owns Andrew's Steak House and Econo Lodge. The businesses are planning to host the state Jaycees convention later in the year and wanted approval to have liquor sold on the Sunday during the convention.

—February 19, 1990—The high school music department at Rugby started an ambitious project — a marching band program. A number of music students are signed up under the director of Wes Froehlich, music instructor. The goal is for the band to perform at a variety of events in the community and area.

—February 26, 1990—Three residents have filed to run for the office of mayor in Rugby. Incumbent Dave Shelver is among the candidates. Curt Teigen and Jerry McGee are also running.

Other news nuggets: Men's and Ladie's shoes were selling for as low as $25 a pair at Myhre's...A Sunbeam bathroom scale was $8.95 at Miller Drug...A G.E. dishwasher was selling for $549 at Johnson's Plumbing...A one-way ticket to Minneapolis aboard Amtrak's Empire Builder from Rugby was $80...The Hub Supper Club was featuring a steak and lobster Valentine's Day meal for $12.95 a plate.
