Partner takes over Lyric...Selz Church holds first mass... and fire department kept busy during January of 1960

A cold snap ushered in the new year...Little Flower Church's Fr. Cloos was elevated to Monsignor status...and a semi truck tipped over just north of town spilling over 10,000 gallons of propane gas. These were some of the stories making headlines in January of 1960. Here's a few more.

January 7, 1960—Otis Engen took over full ownership of the Lyric Theatre and T&E Outdoor Theatre from his partner, Guy Troyer. Engen has been in the theatre business for 33 years, first as an employee and later a partner with Troyer. Troyer said of his partner taking full owner into the business: "I have confidence in Engen's ability to bring this trade area the best in motion picture entertainment, civic responsibilities and theatre service."

January 14, 1960—Church services were held for the first time in the newly-built St. Anthony's Catholic Church of Selz. A fire destroyed the church on Jan. 6, 1959. The Fiest Construction Co. of Minot built the church with the assistance of parishoners. Services were held in the school gym until the new church was ready.

January 21, 1960—Ben Axtman received the Rugby Jaycees "Young Farmer of the Year" award during the Rugby Junior Chamber of Commerce's awards banquet. Ben lives on a farm near Pleasant Lake which he works on shared with his father, Michael. The farm has 960 acres and a medium-sized herd of cattle.

January 28, 1960—The Rugby Fire Department was kept busy, responding to a number of rural and in-city calls. One was at the Joe Duchscher farm which destroyed a barn and eight milk cows and chickens. A fire believed to have started in a bedroom at the Evelyn (Anderson) Curtis home in Rugby also caused severe damage.

New Nuggets Three dozen oranges were selling for $1 at Bickler's Super Market...Rugby Creamery was featuring Butterfinger candy ice cream for $1 a gallon....January close-out sale at Gronvold Motor Company included a Ford two-door Fairlane 500 for only $1,395.
