![]() From the Pages of the Past'64 saw work begin on the Rugby Fire Hall addition and the opening of the DQ
A large hail storm southeast of Rugby caused big damage to the Otto Blekeberg...Rugby's Babe Ruth baseball team claimed another Monte Woods League title and a child from Pierce County found a rare Cecropia or Emperor moth, the largest of the species in the United State and apparently quite rare. Kenneth Aamodt's seven-year-old daughter, Shirley gets credit for the find. All these events occurred in July of 1964, and here is a few more stories that made headlines that month.
July 2, 1964—Burglars broke glass, and eventually busted down doors at two businesses on the outskirts of Rugby, making away with about $250 in goods and causing a good bit of damage, according to Walt Miltenberger, Pierce Co. Sheriff. The two businesses hit was Vic's Bottles Shop where the criminals took the works. At Tuchscherer's Implement quite a bit of vandalism was reported. An adding machine was thrown to the cement floor and nearly every tool was taken. July 9, 1964—Pierce County voters approved a three-mill addition for special education needs for the handicapped students in the local school district. The top vote-getter in District Four county commission election was incumbent Nick A. Axtman. He received, however, just 11 more votes than challenger John A. Mack. July 16, 1964—Work began on the new fire hall addition, just east of the old building and extending to the alley. The new brick one-story building will be approximately 64 feet by 50 feet and will have three stalls for fire trucks. July 23, 1964—Melvin Akerlind and Orpha Vestre brought the first Dairy Queen to Rugby. The Drive-In, absolutely new, is located a short distance east of the C&G Plumbing and Heating establishment on Highway 2, just south of Rugby. In addition to Dairy Queen products, they will also supply short orders, soft drinks and broasted chicken. Here a few more news nuggets. Rugby's Home of Economy was promoting a buy one Firestone tire, get the second for half price for as low as $11.52...A large 18 oz jar of Fairway peanut butter was 49 cents at Rugby Super Fair grocer...A cooling fan was priced at $10.88 at Lee Variety and Department Store...Children's dress shoes were selling for $4 or $5 a pair at Jacobson's. Showing at the Lyric: Tom Jones, The Son of Captain Blood, FBI Code 98, The Bridge on the River Kwai. Person of the Week: This rural Rugby teen was selected to play in the National FFA band in Kansas City, MO., becoming the first Rugby FFA member to earn this distinction.
