June of '94 saw new hospital CEO hired and two attorneys advance at primary election

Dave Cichos was elected Rugby Mayor...Pierce County Fair board was busy making last-minute arrangements for the five-day event...and heavy rains continued to bombard the region, forcing a disaster declaration from the county commission. All this occurred in June of 1994, and here is a few more stories that made headlines that month.

June 6, 1994—Three local attorneys ran in the Pierce Co. Primary election for the Northeast District Judgeship based in Rugby. They were Carlan Kraft, Bill Hartl and John McClintock Jr. — Hartl and McClintock would be the top vote getters and move on to the general election. June 13, 1994—John Enright, the man who has traveled across the United State, three times in a wheelchair, stopped in Rugby and gave an inspirational speech to Heart of America Medical Center and Johnson Clinic staff. Enright was en route to Denver as part of his "Wheeling USA" tour which began in 1992 and will cover 15,000 miles.

June 20, 1994—The Good Samaritan Hospital Board hired Jerry Jurena to serve as CEO of the Heart of America Medical Center. He was selected from 40 candidates. He was working at Trinity Hosptial in Wolf Point, Montana.

June 27, 1994—Three area rodeo participants qualified for the National High School Rodeo Finals in Gillette, Wyoming based on their performance at the state rodeo finals. Nici Meyer, Barton, won the state barrel racing competition, and will compete in that event. Lana Higbee will compete in the goat tying and breakaway roping events at nationals. Her sister, Shanna, competed in two events at state finals, and also took part in the Miss N.D. Rodeo Queen contest where she was voted Miss Congeniality. Towner's Robert Mohagen advanced to nationals by being named reserve champion in saddle bronc riding.

Here's a few more news nuggets.

Spring wheat was $3.75 a bushel...a large single topping pizza at Pizza Hut was $6.99...Men's Lee Jean's were $18.88 a pair at Borth's Department Store...A Eureka Bravo vacuum cleaner was selling for $89.99 at Hardware Hank.

Playing at the Centre Cinema: Cops and Robbersons, White Fang 2, The Chase, Eight Seconds.

Person of the week: He was born and raised in Alabama. After serving in WWII and marrying his wife, Mary, he and moved to Rugby in the last 1940s. He worked many years for the Pierce County Soil Conservation District and served the community on many organizations and committees. He died in June of 1994 at the age of 73.
